Capt. Fred Rossiter reports bubble rings! When I am on the water, I see dolphin everywhere. They have learned to mooch fish from fishermen. We'll catch some fish and release them back into the water. Pretty soon, the dolphin zero in on those boats catching fish and then they come over to mooch a free meal. When the exhausted fish is returned to the water, the dolphin are waiting. Wham! They take the fish. I saw a dolphin take a fish in mid air as it jumped out of the water to escape the dolphin. We don't like having our prized game fish eaten by the dolphin so we try to fool them or we move the boat to a different location. On two of these occasions, with the dolphin right next to the boat, I witnessed a dolphin make a bubble ring. If I hadn't already seen the You Tube videos, I probably would not have recognized it for what it was. But, clearly, wild dolphin know how to make bubble rings .... at least in my local waters. OUR THIRD MONTH OF 2010 HAS ARRIVED! At this writing the lovely people of Chile are facing an earthquake, larger than Haiti. Is it my imagination or are these cataclysmic events happening more often and with greater furor? It seems that Mother Earth is shifting restlessly in her position - Do you believe in the Hypothesis of Gaia? Google the word Gaia and you will find the excerpt below and a link to the complete article. It is a fascinating theory and one that is especially relevant now when it seems as though the world has lost its mind and its equilibrium. Food for Thought: If indeed Mother Earth is a living breathing organism, is she alive and well? Or just barely alive? |

Lt. Colonel Joe Milner is back from his tour of duty in Iraq, (Chapter 9 titled MY RIGHT BRAIN ) and writes: I have been selected for a National Defense Fellowship and will spend a year (starting in July 2010) in Wash DC at the Institute for Defense Analysis. It is a think tank where they plan and analyze a wide variety of defense issues both internal to the US, but also how other nation's actions affect us as well. Should be a good time and a great opportunity to use the creative side again! Unfortunatly that means leaving CA, so we have been doing everything we could to see as much as possible in our limited time left. We went to San Francisco for Thanskgiving and to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Parade and game on 1 Jan. They were both so much fun. San Francisco is such a great city and we had an really fun time there! |

New Poem by Kyle Moshrefi Chapter 6, Fireplace Meditations in "The Creative Epiphany" tattoo. your heart beats breath into me sustaining life and visions of clarity. the severity of your touch was so much that i had to sew your name onto my sleeve with the strings of your heart that you left behind. and when i was through, only one thing rang true -- the "u" in “you” was no longer found. i searched all over the ground. i searched every bit but nothing fit in my hand the way you used to… and as this realization sunk in my skin turned cold and blue. i slammed the needle down, all smiles turning to frowns as self-loathing unloaded its bed of bricks inside of me. my stomach a cement mixer of good intention gone wrong. a sing and dance song to the beat of your heart no longer in rhythm with my own. you left this home long ago. but i can't let go of the unraveling thread so i surrender to the smell of your skin in our broken bed. silence echoing the four corners of this room in place of your laughter and it's here in the aftermath that lessons are learned. but lessons don’t bring back turned faces and lessons can’t erase memories of a time when i held your hand in mine so i'll suffer the consequence of time and space and carry on with a poker face but i'll miss you. at least that much i know will withstand the darkness. i miss you. at least that much will still hold true. |
Joe Milner, Lt. Colonel, USAF - Chapter 9 in The Creative Epiphany recently returned from Iraq writes: "We are staying busy - as we had the Pinewood Derby races last weekend and it was a blast! My son Andrew is 9, built his first car this year and won FIRST PLACE for his Cub Scout den, so he was very excited. While I was glad he won for his sake, I was more proud of how he cheered for every other scout's car just as hard as he did for his. His sportsmanship was awesome and I was a proud dad...:)" (See more news about Joe farther down the page) |
| What is the hypothesis of Gaia? Stated simply, the idea is that we may have discovered a living being bigger, more ancient, and more complex than anything from our wildest dreams. That being, called Gaia, is the Earth. More precisely: that about one billion years after it's formation, our planet was occupied by a meta-life form which began an ongoing process of transforming this planet into its own substance. All the life forms of the planet are part of Gaia. In a way analogous to the myriad different cell colonies which make up our organs and bodies, the life forms of earth in their diversity coevolve and contribute interactively to produce and sustain the optimal conditions for the growth and prosperity not of themselves, but of the larger whole, Gaia. That the very makeup of the atmosphere, seas, and terrestrial crust is the result of radical interventions carried out by Gaia through the evolving diversity of living creatures. Encountering the Earth from space, a witness would know immediately that the planet was alive. The atmosphere would give it away. The atmospheric compositions of our sister planets, venus and mars, are: 95-96% carbon dioxide, 3-4% nitrogen, with traces of oxygen, argon and methane. The earth's atmosphere at present is 79% nitrogen, 21% oxygen with traces of carbon dioxide, methane and argon. The difference is Gaia, which transforms the outer layer of the planet into environments suitable to its further growth. For example, bacteria and photosynthetic algae began some 2.8 billions of years ago extracting the carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, setting the stage for larger and more energetic creatures powered by combustion, including, ultimately, ourselves. This will serve as an introduction to the Gaia hypothesis; It is a review (published in 1989) of James Lovelock's The Ages of Gaia read more at: erg.ucd.ie/arupa/references/gaia.html |
